Mavis Chen is a professionally trained musician in both music performance and music theory, specializing in flute and piano. She began playing the piano at age 6 and started learning the flute at 11. By age 13, she had passed the 6th level of the Japan Kawai Music Exam, qualifying her to teach piano. At 14, she earned second prize in a county flute competition and successfully completed the ABRSM theory exams.

Throughout her school years—elementary, junior high, and college—Mavis was actively involved in choir singing, which further enriched her musical background. She later pursued a bachelor’s degree in flute and piano performance, followed by a master’s degree in flute performance from Shenandoah University in 2006. In 2018, she advanced her studies by obtaining a Professional Performance Certificate from Pennsylvania State University.

 

As a professional flute and piano player, Mavis has performed with various woodwind ensembles and concert bands, showcasing her artistry in local and international venues. She has accumulated many years of experience performing with wind bands, allowing her to develop strong ensemble skills and interpretative versatility across a wide range of styles and repertoires. These extensive performance experiences have shaped her into a well-rounded and dynamic performer and educator.

 

Mavis is a passionate advocate of music education. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes cultivating both enthusiasm and professionalism in young musicians. She believes that music is not just a skill, but a powerful tool to help students succeed both in music and in life. In her classes, she incorporates creative techniques and innovative technologies to make music learning engaging, relevant, and inspiring. She encourages students to explore their musical identity while building a strong technical foundation.

 

Mavis believes in making music joyful and fulfilling. Her greatest hope is to share the fun, beauty, and satisfaction she experiences in her own musical journey with every student she teaches
