Joseph Chang
Piano Instructor
Joseph Chang, aka “Mr. Joe,” began his musical journey at the age of 4, where he first started taking piano lessons under the instruction of his grandmother. Since then, he has continued his study of piano and music through various academic outlets. Mr. Chang first began studying at Ohlone College, where he received his A.A. in Music for Transfer and A.A. in Human Development Studies. In 2019, Mr. Chang was also awarded as Ohlone College’s Student of the Year (Music Department). He has since received his B.M. in Music Education (Instrumental Emphasis) in 2025 at San Jose State University, studying piano under Dr. Gwendolyn Mok. Currently, Mr. Joe is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Music Education at San Jose State.
Mr. Joe has acquired abundant experience in ABRSM’s exam curriculum, including their Piano Performance exams (Grades 1-8, with Certificates of Merit and Distinction) and Music Theory (Grades 1-6, with Certificates of Merit and Distinction). He has also competed in the U.S. Open Music Competition(s) from 2015-16, earning 3rd place in two different Open Solo categories and in their Intermediate Sight Reading Solo Category. While at Ohlone College, Mr. Joe contributed to the arranging and transcribing of multiple pieces in preparation for the Jazz/Rock Ensemble’s semesterly concerts. He has also picked clarinet as his secondary instrument, and performed with the San Jose State Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble from 2022 to 2024.
Outside of music academics, Mr. Joe is has previously served as a College Ministry Worship Director at Resonate Church, and also worked as a Worship Director at Pathway Community Church. He has previously released a self-produced worship album in 2021 titled “Honest Tears, Vol. 1” (available on all major streaming platforms) and is currently working on “Honest Tears, Vol. 2.”
At SVCM, Mr. Joe is one of the private piano instructors, and teaches the Harmony Road group classes and helps direct the annual SVCM Summer Camps.
