Michelle Hsu

Cello & Keyboard Instructor

Dr. Hsu pursued her master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Texas at Austin under the guidance of Bion Tsang. She received her bachelor’s degree in cello performance from National Taiwan Normal University, where she also studied piano and vocal.

 

Dr. Hsu began teaching cello at the age of 16, with students ranging from young beginners (age 7) to adults, offering both foundational and advanced instruction. She also served as a sectional cello teacher for school orchestras in Taiwan. While studying in the U.S., she taught private cello and piano lessons. In 2019, she completed the Suzuki Cello Book 1 teacher training course in Taiwan, led by Shuyi Scott.

 

Dr. Hsu began studying piano at the age of three, violin at five, and she started cello at six under the guidance of her mother. From the age of eight, she received formal training through Taiwan’s specialized music education system.

 

In the U.S., Dr. Hsu was appointed Assistant Principal in 2024-2025 Season with the Central Texas Philharmonic and served as cello substitute in 2023. She plays as a cello substitute with Waco Symphony Orchestra and New World Symphony in 2024–2025 Season. She also performed Eva and the Angel of Death with Density512 in 2022. In Taiwan, she played cello substitute with several orchestras, including YinQi Choral-Symphonic Orchestra from 2019 to 2021, and National Taiwan University of Arts Chinese Orchestra in 2019. In the same year, she was cello substitute with Philharmonia Moments Musicaux, where she also participated with them in the recording and performance of Messages from Afar for Taiwan’s National Space Organization (TASA).

 

On February 15, 2025, Dr. Hsu premiered Washington Arirang at the East Pacific Spirit Culture Conference in Baltimore. In 2022, she was invited by Professor Sandy Yamamoto to perform in the “Sandy and Friends” concert at UT. She was also a finalist in the University of Texas at Austin Concerto Competition in 2020. From 2018 to 2019, she frequently represented NTNU in performances at the Chimei Museum in Tainan. In 2019, she performed as a musician for the Popular Music department at NTNU in a concert that featured renowned singer Michelle Pan (Pan Yueh-Yun). In the same year, she also recorded as the cellist for the song Say No More by the band Chairman.

 

Dr. Hsu was selected by her professors to represent NTNU in the NTNU Music Festival series, performing string quartet in 2017 and string duo in 2016. She was a member in the cello ensemble “Cello Rock” under Professor Ling-Yi Ouyang from 2017 to 2019 and 2021. In 2021, she played DvoÅ™ák Cello Concerto first movement as soloist in a cello ensemble arrangement with “Cello Rock”. Notably, Cello Rock was selected for the 'Rising Stars' concert series by the New Taipei City Government in 2018, earning the opportunity to perform at the New Taipei City Arts Center Concert Hall. Dr. Hsu won the first place in the NTNU String Quartet Competition in 2016 and 2017. She also won several first prizes in National Music Competitions in Taiwan, including Piano Trio (2009, 2011, 2014), Piano Quintet (2013), and String Quartet (2016). She also received numerous awards for cello solo, including Second Prize in the NTNU Cello Concerto Competition (2018, 2020), Third Prize in the Taoyuan Regional Music Competition (2013), and Third Prize in the Taipei Regional Music Competition (2009, 2011).

 

In the second half of 2025, Dr. Hsu will release an album of cello solo and chamber works by female composers—including Clara Schumann, Rebecca Clarke, and Sarana Chou—in collaboration with pianist Jeanne Hourez and violist Gwanji Lee.
